Indoor Safety

Whether you are playing inside or outside, in the water or on the land, there are a number of hazards surrounding you that you've probably never even noticed before. Follow these safety tips and you'll be sure to have fun and play it safe.

  • Don't touch electrical cords that are broken or have wires showing.
  • Don't play with (or bite) electrical cords.
  • Don't stick fingers, money, toys, or any other objects into light sockets, appliances or electrical outlets.
  • Don't plug all of your toys and electronics into one outlet - overloading it can be dangerous. Also, make sure your hands are dry when you are playing with toys and games that need to be plugged in.
  • Don't pull on cords to unplug appliances. Hold on to the plug itself - yes, it's more work, but it will keep you safe and make the item last longer.
  • Always turn off a light before replacing the bulb.
  • Don't use water to put out an electrical fire; use baking soda or a chemical fire extinguisher. If you can do it safely, unplug the item that is on fire first.

Be Prepared for Power Outages

  • Keep several flashlights around the house.
  • Always have extra batteries on hand, and make sure they are fresh. Candles and matches must be used with extreme care and should never be left unattended.
  • Own a battery-powered radio to hear news bulletins.
  • Keep bottled water on hand.
  • Keep canned and other non-perishable foods available.
  • Own a manual can opener.
