Conservation Tips
There are a lot of easy things you can do around the house and at school to conserve water and electricity! Don't keep these tips a secret! Be sure to share them with your friends and family!
Tips for Water Conservation
- Don't keep the water running while you're brushing your teeth.
- Help your mom or dad fix the dripping faucet if you have one.
- Use cold water to wash hands instead of waiting for it to heat up.
- Take shorter showers. Make it a game. Keep an egg timer in the bathroom and see who can get their showers down to five minutes, four minutes, or even three minutes. (And still get clean!)
- Encourage your parents to install a water saving shower-head. In addition to the water it saves, it also saves the fuel that would have been used to heat up the extra hot water. And that reduces pollution.
- Fill a plastic bottle with water and place it in your toilet tank. (The part in the back!) It will take up the same space as the water usually does, but in a year, it will keep tons of water from going down the drain.
- Stop throwing away so many batteries. The mercury in old batteries will eventually leak out and poison the water it runs into. Instead buy rechargeable alkaline batteries. They can be charged 25 times. That means 25 batteries you didn't have to buy and throw away.
Saving Electricity
- Don't leave lights on when no one is in the room. If you are going to be out of the room for more than 5 minutes, turn off the light. If you know of a light that everyone forgets to turn off, make a sticker or a sign to hang next to the switch that says "Lights Out" or "Don't Forget."
- Open and close the refrigerator door quickly when choosing a snack.
- Close doors when going outside or coming inside when the heat or air conditioning is on.
- Keep the oven door closed and pans covered while food is cooking.
- Walk or bicycle instead of asking for rides in the car.
