University of Windsor Conserves Their Way to a GreenSTAR Award (May 6, 2010)

The University of Windsor, along the Detroit River in Windsor, Ontario and home to over 16,000 full-time students and hundreds of staff and faculty, has recently taken it upon themselves to better their business and our environment through numerous retrofits and energy-efficient upgrades. In honour of their hard work and contribution to conservation, ENWIN is proud to present them with a GreenSTAR Award.

Looking at how the University of Windsor began their energy conservation efforts, it has taken many steps to ensure the success of various projects from recycling programs to reducing energy and water consumption. It currently participates in province-wide energy audits that reveal how energy is being consumed, and has established a Campus Environmental Committee that sees participation from both staff and students. Along with these efforts, retrofits such as: automatic sensor flush valves, low-flow shower heads, lawn sprinkler controls and the removal of water-cooled HVAC units have helped to reduce the water consumption in facilities across the 125-acre campus.

Further adding to their environmentally-conscious improvements, internal recycling programs that have participation from staff and students, retrofits in lighting, the adoption of LEED principles for all new construction projects and countless other areas of improvement display the University of Windsor's growing commitment to energy conservation. As a result of these programs, the university recycles approximately 95% of all light tubes, all computers, adopted 300 watt halogen torchier light fixtures that reduce energy consumption by 75% and continue to retrofit lecture halls and other facilities around campus.

The road to conservation that the University of Windsor is on is sure to persist for the next few years as they continue to retrofit and make changes in their campus facilities. Nonetheless their accomplishments thus far are highly commendable. Congratulations to the management and staff of the University of Windsor on becoming an outstanding local conservation leader!
