Ground Effects Ltd. Conserves Their Way to an EnWin GreenSTAR Award (September 17, 2009)

Ground Effects Ltd., located in the heart of Windsor, Ontario and home to over 250 employees, has recently taken it upon themselves to better their business and our environment through numerous retrofits and energy efficient upgrades. In honour of their hard work and contribution to conservation, ENWIN is proud to present them with a GreenSTAR Award.

Looking back at where it all began, Ground Effects Ltd. had energy audits conducted at all 5 of their facilities in order to determine where improvements could be made. As a result of their findings, 36 - 1000 watt Metal Halide lights at Plant 4 were replaced and plans to implement similar programs at the rest of their facilities were scheduled to occur by year end, which could result in the replacement of an additional 214 lights. These lighting retrofits will contribute to reduced energy costs as well as a significantly lower demand on the power grid. In an attempt to avoid the landfill, GFX Ltd. is working with Metal Logistics to reuse/recycle all 250 of the metal halide lights further adding to their environmentally conscious improvements.

In the fall of 2003, Ground Effects Ltd. was granted Certification for ISO 14001. Since that time, they have become a role model for similar manufacturing operations by reducing their steel, stainless steel and aluminum waste and virtually eliminating wood scraps/pallets, plastic, poly sleeves, cardboard, batteries, e-waste, copper, brass, florescent tubes, office paper and paper towels from their waste stream. As a result, their waste-to-landfill monthly tonnage was reduced from 40 to an impressive less than 6.

In addition to these remarkable conservation steps, Ground Effects Ltd. not only encourages their employees to conserve on the job, but also to bring in their e-waste from home to be donated to Computers for Kids. This amazing contribution not only contributes to less waste in our landfills but also gives children an opportunity that they may not have otherwise been granted.

The road to conservation that Ground Effects Ltd. is on is sure to persist for the next few years as they continue to retrofit and make changes in all five of their facilities, nonetheless their accomplishments thus far are highly commendable.

Congratulations to the management and staff of Ground Effects Ltd. on becoming an outstanding local conservation leader!!
