Conservation In Apartments
Whether you pay your hydro electricity bill directly, or it is included in the rent, you can always benefit from Conserving electricity in your apartment. Here are some Conservation tips designed specifically for our customers living in apartments.
- Use "task lighting" rather than lighting the whole room unnecessarily.
- Replace incandescent lamps with compact fluorescent lights.
- Dust your lamps and light fixtures with the power off. Even a thin layer of dust reduces light levels.
- Unless absolutely necessary, use a fan rather than an air conditioner during the summer.
- Use curtains and shades on your windows to keep the heat in during the winter.
- Computers (and particularly laser printers) can really run up your power bills. Keep your printer turned off using the switch on the printer when not in use.
- Have a hairdryer? Use it sparingly, and don't use the maximum heat setting - not only will you save energy, but your scalp will thank you too.
- Thaw, or partially thaw, frozen foods in the refrigerator before cooking.
- Small appliances use less power than larger ones. Save money by using a microwave oven rather than a regular electric oven/stove. Use an electric kettle rather than a stovetop one.
- When cooking, do not open the oven door to examine the food - try looking through the window instead.
- Encourage your landlord to supply EnerStar Rated Appliances.
- Caulk and weatherstrip windows and exterior doors (with your landlords permission).
- Carefully select, install, and use window treatments or coverings.
